Short Description The Flame of Life is the novel in which d'Annunzio portrays himself as the Nietzschean Superman Stelio Effrena in a fictionalized account of his scandalous love affair with the actress Eleonora Duse.
Praise Gabriele d'Annunzio was one of the most important Italian writers and playwrights of his day. In the First World War he also became famous for his exploits as a fighter pilot. In 1919, he led a small army of volunteers to occupy the disputed city of Fiume, becoming its "Duce" (Leader) for more than a year and establishing a new social system. Some regard this as a precursor of Fascism. D'Annunzio did lend his support to Mussolini and Fascism in its early days, although his later relations with Mussolini were much more contentious.
