| Short Description | The Flame of Life is the novel in which d'Annunzio portrays himself as the Nietzschean Superman Stelio Effrena in a fictionalized account of his scandalous love affair with the actress Eleonora Duse. |
| Praise | Gabriele d'Annunzio was one of the most important Italian writers and playwrights of his day. In the First World War he also became famous for his exploits as a fighter pilot. In 1919, he led a small army of volunteers to occupy the disputed city of Fiume, becoming its "Duce" (Leader) for more than a year and establishing a new social system. Some regard this as a precursor of Fascism. D'Annunzio did lend his support to Mussolini and Fascism in its early days, although his later relations with Mussolini were much more contentious. |
