| Short Description | In this book the author attempts to trace the evolution of the doctrine of predestination over the course of a thousand year. Starting with Augustine, Catholic theologians argued that the salvation of different individuals is based on God's will and good purpose rather than on his foreknowledge of what human beings will do. A consensus was built around this insight over the course of hundreds of years until the late Middle Ages, when authors such as Peter Aureol, William of Ockham and Pietro Pomponazzi began to question this understanding as incompatible with God's love and inclusivism. The author's research includes the writings of several ancient theologians; church documents; papal decrees ; and ancient prayer books. |
