Quick Overview

This long work is Schuon's most important philosophical opus in the sense of containing long chapters devoted to specifically philosophical questions such as relativism, the notion of concrete and abstract, and rationalism. But the book also contains some of his most succinct theological discussions concerning both Christian and Islamic theology. The last part of the book turns again to diverse questions of the spiritual life, including a discussion of the function of the spiritual master and concludes with a study of man and certitude.

Product Description

Schuon's Introduction begins with the paragraph:

"Writings falling outside the fields of science and modern philosophy tend to suffer from associations of ideas which are usually inadequate, being immediately consigned by most people to categories which rightly or wrongly have disparaging implications, such as "occultism," "syncretism," "gnosticism," "intellectualism," or "esoterism."

Schuon then proceeds to 'rehabilitate' these concepts in the minds of objective readers, always pointing out that the negative associations with which these terms are charged by modern critics dissolve when the terms are put into their rightful place, namely in the service of Truth.

The point that Schuon is making is clear: Despite the reflexes of modern critics to demean traditional thought by means of labels such as those above in order to place them outside the realm of modern and thus "legitimate" study, those who would follow Truth must inevitably follow its traces within both ancient and modern thought, and Eastern and Western settings — wherever Truth is to found. In the essays that make up Logic and Transcendence, Schuon leads the reader through topics and considerations that defy categorizations but that have the unifying thread of focusing the mind and spirit on the myriad manifestations of Truth and Beauty wherever Providence touches the sphere of human life.
