Quick Overview

Unlike the overwhelming majority of academic texts claiming to expose the inner make-up of the Far Right, this book deliberately ignores the emotion elicited by groups on the fringes of British politics and, instead, seeks to offer a more honest and accurate analysis.

Product Description

Troy Southgate, a popular writer and musician who has been involved in political activity for over twenty-five years, begins his study with a broad overview of the British Far Right between 1919 and 1986. He then charts the gradual transformation of the National Front (NF) into a hardline revolutionary movement and looks at the groups that either grew out of the NF or operated within the same time-frame. The author is convinced that the period between 1987 and 1994 was generally one of the most important in the history and development of the Far Right in Britain, not least because, while some of the organisations in existence at the time were influenced by German National-Socialism or Italian Fascism, most did not fit into the stereotypical pigeon-holes designed for them by their detractors on the liberal and Far Left. With its unique insights and surprising conclusions, this book is a valuable contribution to the ongoing debate surrounding the nature of racism and fascism in Britain, and finally places on record a period in British politics that has never previously been afforded a comprehensive academic treatment.

Short Description Unlike the overwhelming majority of academic texts claiming to expose the inner make-up of the Far Right, this book deliberately ignores the emotion elicited by groups on the fringes of British politics and, instead, seeks to offer a more honest and accurate analysis.
Praise In this well structured and disciplined study, Troy Southgate examines the major political players in the British Far Right between 1987 and 1994, and attempts to determine, based on said players' ideological positions, whether they could accurately have been called Nazi, Fascist, or none the above. Southgate contends that the characterisations of Far Right groups by the Left and the media are confused and simplistic, with often conflicting and / or contradictory ideologies lumped into a generic (and nonsensical) 'fascist' or 'Nazi' label. Southgate's succint but detailed analysis, elaborated from primary sources and benefiting from the author's in-depth knowledge of the actors, is highly educational; it also brings some surprising conclusions. I expect this text to become an essential reference for anyone interested in the Far Right in Britain.
About the Author Troy Southgate was born in Crystal Palace, South London, and has been involved in revolutionary politics as both an activist and underground journalist for over 25 years. He is also the author of Tradition & Revolution (Integral Tradition Publishing, 2007). His other roles include being a founder of National-Anarchism, Editor of the popular Synthesis webzine (http://www.rosenoire.org), Organising Secretary of the New Right and a long-suffering football supporter. Elsewhere, he has been involved with almost 20 different music projects, most notably HERR, Seelenlicht, Von Thronstahl and Horologium. Troy has four children and educates them at home.
